Jefferson Twp. officials will host the annual Bike Rodeo and Community Day Aug. 9 where local children can learn important bicycle-safety skills and participate in other fun activities.

Sponsored by the Jefferson Twp. Police Department in conjunction with the township’s recreation committee, the event runs from 1-4 p.m. at Jefferson Elementary Center, 825 Lions Road, Jefferson Twp. If postponed by rain, the event will be rescheduled to Aug. 10, also from 1-4 p.m.

Township Secretary/Treasurer Patricia Evanchyk said the bike rodeo will begin with bicycle inspections and helmet checks, noting helmets in need of replacement will be replaced. Kids will then get an opportunity to learn and test their safety skills on multiple obstacle courses, she said.

“The bike rodeo will focus on teaching kids 14 and under the importance of bike safety and associated skills to keep them safe,” a post on the township’s website notes. “Kids bring their bikes, practice and develop skills that will help them become better bicyclists and avoid typical crashes.”

Community businesses and organizations will also participate in the broader event, which Evanchyk said will feature a scavenger hunt where kids can get a card stamped by those various participants for entry in a raffle to win a gift card. All activities, refreshments and prizes during the event will be free for the community.

Preregistration is required. To do so, email Evanchyk at secretary@jeffersontownshippa.com or call the township office at 570-689-7028 ext.106.
