Living in a quiet rural area of Covington and Clifton Townships in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, we cherish the tranquility and natural beauty that define our community. However, a recent decision by local supervisors threatens to permanently alter this landscape. Their vote to rezone 500 acres of our land for the construction of a massive data center brings both concern and alarm to local residents.
The proposed data center, with its 35 structures, will tower over our rural setting. Some buildings are planned to reach over 120 feet, overshadowing our countryside and disrupting our views. Beyond the visual impact, the data center introduces significant environmental risks. It includes the development of 35 wells, a move that can drastically disrupt local water tables, impacting the water supply for nearby homes and farms. Furthermore, the site location at the headwaters of the Lehigh River watershed poses a threat not just to our community, but to the broader ecological systems dependent on this vital water source.
The introduction of such an expansive industrial complex not only mars our cherished environment but also threatens to bring unwelcome light and noise pollution, disturbing the peace that we hold dear in our rural lifestyle. Additionally, this project requires leveling a square mile of our precious forest, erasing habitats for local wildlife and diminishing the natural beauty we all rely on.
Our priority is to maintain the unique character of our community and preserve our ecosystem for future generations. We urge local authorities to reconsider and halt this rezoning in favor of protecting the integrity and sustainability of our environment. Your voice matters in this fight to save our landscape from irreversible change.
