Firefighters responded to a second-alarm fire Thursday night in the 300 block of North 17th Avenue that displaced four residents and saw one man transported to a hospital.

Scranton Fire Chief John Judge said 317 and 319 N. 17th Ave. were “well involved” when fire crews pulled up to the residences just after 11 p.m. Firefighters immediately confirmed everyone was out of both houses and then worked to put out the flames.

They were on scene for about seven hours, Judge said.

A resident of 319 N. 17th Ave. was taken to a local hospital for treatment of burns and smoke inhalation, he said.

As of Friday afternoon, the victim was in stable condition, Judge said.

The houses were relatively close together, with only about 4 to 5 feet between them.

“That’s why the fire spread from one to the other,” Judge said.

Judge described the damage to both houses as “significant.”

Three residents of 317 N. 17th Ave. are staying with family, he said.

The Red Cross was on scene and assisted the fire victims, Judge said.

The fire briefly reignited later Friday morning, and firefighters responded to the scene and quelled a small area, ensuring the fire was completely out.

Scranton Fire Department investigators are working to determine a cause of the fire.
