Flash flooding slammed the Honesdale area in the wake of heavy rainstorms Tuesday night and crews are out cleaning up the mess.

Honedale Mayor Derek Frey Williams posted a travel notice on Facebook stating the intersection of 4th and Main Streets was blocked due to flooding and emergency responders were redirecting traffic. Drivers also were asked to avoid Terrace Street and Vine Street intersection and Erie Street where the creek has flooded the road.

The National Weather Service in Binghamton, N.Y., issued a flash flood warning at 4:23 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Tuesday for Northeast Lackawanna County, Eastern Susquehanna County and Northwestern Wayne County. Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the area. Between one and two inches of rain was expected.

Small creeks and streams in urban areas were in danger of overflowing onto highways, streets and underpasses as well as other poor drainage and low-lying areas.

Locations with potential to experience flash flooding include Honesdale, Carbondale, Archbald, Susquehanna, Forest City, Mayfield, Susquehanna Depot, Waymart, Hancock, Lanesboro, Thompson, Union Dale, Prompton, Bethany, Starrucca, Pleasant Mount, Shehawken, Starruca, Starlight and Hiawatha.
