Memorial Day parade: Jermyn annual Memorial Day parade will be held May 26 at 11 a.m. Parade starts at Washington and Franklin avenues, proceeding on South Washington Avenue, ending at the Jermyn Cemetery, Cemetery Street. Participants to gather at Convenient Mart on Franklin Avenue beginning at 10:30 a.m. Immediately following the parade at the Jermyn Cemetery, the William J. Griffiths American Legion Post 465 will conduct the Memorial Military Service for all fallen veterans. Lakeland School District’s eighth grade essay winners, Bryson Bechtek and Greta Takach, will read their essay “What Freedom Means to Me.” Commander Jones will present to them a certificate of recognition and monetary gift commemorating their 2025 Memorial Day Award. Lakeland School District Band will provide military arrangements and Big Bear Production will have a presentation of music and song honoring veterans during the program. After the veteran service program, free hot dogs and beverages will be provided to all participants at the Artisan Hose Company, Maple Street, sponsored by the W.J. Griffiths American Legion Post 465. If inclement weather, all parade and ceremony participants go directly to the Artisan Hose Company and the ceremony will begin at 11 a.m.

Lackawanna County

Trolley event: The Electric City Trolley Museum will host a Morning with Mother Goose on May 24.This event includes a hunt for the Golden Egg in the museum from 10:15 to 10:30 a.m. with a special prize for the finde,r followed by a trolley excursion with Mother Goose. There will also be balloon art and arts and crafts from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m., children, $10.  Accompanying adults get free museum admission with $5 purchase for trolley excursion. Annual golf tournament: Ninth annual John J. Michaels Memorial VFW Auxiliary 5207 Golf Tournament, captain and crew format, June 22, Pine Hills Country Club, 140 S. Trash/recycling collection: City Hall will be closed Tuesday for primary election day. The Department of Public Works will be working Tuesday with no disruption of trash and recycling.

Throop

Cemetery decoration: The members of Herbert Clark Post 180 Throop American Legion will place new flags on all veterans graves at St. John’s, St. Mary’s and Holy Family cemeteries Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. starting at St. Mary’s on Sanderson  Avenue. In case of rain, the cemeteries will be decorated Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

West Scranton

Scholarship presentation: Ancient Order of Hibernians fifth annual Vice President Kevin Shaughnessy Memorial Scholarship presentation will be Tuesday at 5 p.m. in St. Patrick’s Church. The scholarship is presented in the name of Shaughnessy, who died in 2020 and was a lifelong member at St. Patrick’s Church and had a big impact on the Paul “Hook” O’Malley Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 4. The scholarships are presented to two eighth grade students at All Saints Academy; Olivia Madore and Gregg Russo will be receiving their scholarships for Holy Cross High School.
