Scranton firefighters retrieve kayak from river

SCRANTON — City firefighters removed a kayak from the Lackawanna River on Sunday afternoon, Scranton Assistant Chief Brian Scott said.

Crews responded to the 900 block of Clearview Street around 2:05 p.m. for the report of an overturned kayak in the middle of the river, Scott said.

Once on scene, firefighters found the overturned kayak but couldn’t tell if anyone was in it or underneath it, he said.

“We sent two rescue swimmers into the water and they were able to overturn it and confirm there were no people,” Scott said.

Crews operated at the scene for more than an hour, he added.

While the water was shallow in the middle, Scott noted it was about 5 feet deep closer to the riverbanks and the water was moving pretty fast.

“We have a lot of training in water rescue, so we came up with a game plan,” he said.

Firefighters were unable to determine where the kayak may have come from, Scott added.
