TAYLOR — A Scranton man fled Tuesday as borough police attempted to stop him for a malfunctioning brake light, according to a criminal complaint.
William Kevin Loss, 37, of 309 S. Sherman Ave., is charged with fleeing police and resisting arrest.
According to the criminal complaint:
At about 11:15 p.m., Taylor police saw Loss in an SUV with a smashed rear window pull onto South Main Street toward Scranton.
Officers noted Loss had pulled out from the front of an apartment building known for narcotics. The vehicle then rolled through a red light at South Main and Landis streets, where offices noted Loss had insufficient brake lighting.
Officer David Graham attempted to stop Loss near Archbald Street and South Fifth Avenue.
Instead of stopping, Loss took off down South Fifth Avenue and continued onto West Locust Street, cutting off other motorists.
Graham then spotted Loss in the 1200 block of Euclid Avenue, where his SUV first made a loud noise and then seemed to lose power.
Graham activated his emergency lights and pulled behind Loss.
Loss got out of the vehicle and began running down Euclid Avenue, with police close behind.
After two blocks, officers caught up to Loss and ordered him to lay on his stomach and put his hands behind his back. Loss continued to resist.
Scranton police arrived to assist. Officers from both departments were able to put Loss in handcuffs and take him into custody.
When asked why he ran, Loss made statements about being stabbed, burying his mother and trying to call the FBI.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 10:15 a.m. on June 24 before District Judge Sean McGraw.
