Moosic lays cornerstone for $6.1M fire and police facility

Moosic officials celebrated their upcoming $6.1 million emergency services building Wednesday by laying the cornerstone for the facility that will bring the Police Department and Fire Department under one roof. At a ceremony Wednesday morning outside the new facility, which is behind the existing Greenwood Hose Company 1 firehouse at 3727 Birney Ave., Mayor Bob Bennie said the cornerstone marks a pivotal moment in the project. The borough’s current facility has served the region since 1978. At roughly 18,000 square feet, the new building gives police and firefighters a modern, spacious headquarters, including two interview rooms, a professional evidence room, two holding cells and an armory for police. Firefighters will have four large, pull-through bays for their vehicles, allowing them to park their fire apparatus without having to stop traffic on Birney Avenue. The borough will tear down the Greenwood Hose Company building, with officials hoping to finish construction in November.
