The Wayne County district attorney’s office is warning the public about accepting calls from a someone impersonating a county detective.

The office received a complaint from a resident stating they received a call from “Charlie Macky,” who identified himself as a Wayne County detective. The individual told the resident if they didn’t respond to him, he would send agents to apprehend him, the district attorney’s office said in a news release. The individual provided a call-back number of 570-393-3848.

The office said there is no person named Charlie Macky who is a county detective and the number doesn’t belong to the office.

District Attorney A.G. Howell warned residents in the release to beware of calls from people reporting to be law enforcement as it is almost always a scam where the caller is trying to get money. If a legitimate law enforcement officer calls, he said, they will never ask for money in exchange for dismissing criminal charges.

Anyone who gets a phone call like this is asked to contact Chief Detective Peter Hower at 570-253-5970 ext. 2255.
