Streets in the area of Lackawanna County Courthouse Square will close Thursday afternoon for the annual Scrantastic Spectacular celebration, which begins at 4 p.m. in Scranton.
The following streets will close when the event begins: North Washington Avenue at Mulberry and Biden streets; Adams Avenue between Biden and Linden streets; Linden Street from Forest Court to Adams Avenue; and Jefferson Avenue, Dix Court and Lee Court at Biden Street.
A parking ban in the 200 block of North Washington Avenue, the block directly in front of the courthouse between Biden and Linden streets, will be in effect from 7 a.m. Wednesday through Thursday. No parking will be permitted on the other blocks surrounding the courthouse — the 500 block of Biden, the 200 block of Adams and the 500 block of Linden — from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Thursday.
The Linden, Casey and Medallion parking garages downtown will be accessible at a rate of $6 for the day, the county said, noting in a news release that traffic exiting those garages will be directed through alleys where the main streets are closed.
The Scrantastic Spectacular will feature a patriotic performance by the Northeast Pennsylvania Philharmonic at 7:30 p.m. on the North Washington Avenue side of Courthouse Square and a fireworks display by Zambelli Fireworks beginning about 9:30. The fireworks will be launched from the roof of the Linden parking garage.
No cars or pedestrians will be allowed on the streets adjacent to the garage during the display. Patrons may enter businesses on those blocks, but will have to exit the buildings by 9:20 p.m. if they want to watch the fireworks, the county said.
Information on the celebration, including an event map and lists of vendors and sponsors, is available online at scrantasticspectacular.com. In the event of rain or other inclement weather, the philharmonic’s performance will be moved indoors to Scranton High School’s auditorium and the fireworks display rescheduled for Saturday night.
