Scranton on Wednesday will test two flood-warning sirens along the Lackawanna River: at Shawnee Avenue and Dean Street in the Plot section, and on Middle Street near Barring Avenue and the Scranton Co-op Farmers Market.
Both sirens top approximately 40-foot-tall poles near the foot of a levee of the Lackawanna River. In February 2024, Scranton tested the then-recently-repaired siren at the Shawnee Avenue Pumping Station. The siren on Middle Street is at the Middle Street Pumping Station.
The city also announced Monday that in the event of a flood emergency requiring evacuation, Plot residents would be directed to North Main Avenue to the McDade Expressway, because North Main Avenue northbound might be closed from flooding. The expressway goes to Interstate 81 or Dickson City.
