Historical presentation: Lackawanna Historical Society will present the “Migrant Workforce Behind NEPA’s Agricultural Industry,” April 27, Waverly Community House, 1115 North Abington Road. Jenny Gonzalez will share what she has learned about the county’s migrant workforce as part of her recent research and work to document the local Latino community. Gonzalez, a licensed social worker and director of Marywood University’s STARS program (Students Together Achieving Remarkable Success), spent the last year digging through articles on Newspapers.com to find any references to immigrants from Central and South America and was surprised to discover that migrants were working in the region as far back as the 1940s. She will use that decade as a starting point to trace a timeline of migrant experiences and also include what public educational and social service programs were created to assist the individuals who became an integral part of NEPA’s food production industry. For information, contact the historical society.
